Career interest test

Not sure which kind of work suits you? Say how much you would enjoy 36 everyday work activities. You get your three strongest interest areas, jobs that often match them, and where to start: career guides and free skill tests. About 5 minutes, no account.

Before you start

  • 36 short statements, about 5 minutes.
  • Answer with what you would enjoy, not what you are good at or what pays well. There are no right or wrong answers.
  • Don't think too long: your first feeling is usually the most accurate.

The test runs in your browser. Your answers are not sent or saved.

The six interest areas

The test uses the six interest areas of John Holland's model (often called RIASEC), the most widely used way of matching what people enjoy with kinds of work. Most people have a mix of two or three.

R
PracticalYou like working with your hands, tools, machines and technology, and seeing a real result.
I
InvestigativeYou like understanding how things work: analysing, researching and solving problems with facts and numbers.
A
CreativeYou like creating new things: designing, writing, filming and expressing ideas in your own way.
S
SocialYou like helping, teaching and supporting people, and working closely with them.
E
EnterprisingYou like leading, persuading and making decisions, and taking a project or a business forward.
C
OrganisingYou like order and accuracy: working with figures, records and clear procedures.

How the test works

There are six statements for each area, asked in turn. "I'd enjoy it" counts 2, "Not sure" 1 and "I wouldn't" 0; each area's score is the share of the most it could get. Your three strongest areas, in order, make your interest code, for example SEC.

Questions

Is the career test free?
Yes, it is free and needs no account. You can take it as many times as you like.
What does the career interest test measure?
What kinds of work activities you would enjoy, in six areas: practical, investigative, creative, social, enterprising and organising. It does not measure ability or personality.
Can this test tell me which job to choose?
It cannot choose for you, but it shows directions worth exploring. Read the career guides for your top areas, try the free skill tests, and talk to people who do the work.
What is an interest code such as SEC?
Your three strongest areas, from strongest to weakest: for example S (social), E (enterprising) and C (organising). Jobs that combine these areas are often a good match.
Is what I answer saved?
No. The test runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
