English level test

What is your English level on the European scale, from A1 to C2? Answer 30 questions on grammar, vocabulary and reading. The questions get harder or easier with your answers, so it takes about 15 minutes. No account needed.

Before you start

  • 30 questions, about 15 minutes. There is no time limit.
  • If you don't know an answer, choose "I don't know" instead of guessing: your result will be more accurate.
  • At the end you get your level, your score in each part and the questions you got wrong, with the right answers.

The test runs in your browser. Your answers are not sent or saved.

Prove your other skills too

Your English level is one thing employers look at. Talaskill's free tests prove other skills, such as Excel and customer service, with a verified result you can add to your CV.

What the levels mean

The European scale (CEFR) has six levels and is used by employers, universities and language exams around the world.

A1
BeginnerYou understand and use familiar everyday words and very simple sentences, such as introducing yourself.
A2
ElementaryYou can talk about routine matters, such as your work, shopping and directions, in simple sentences.
B1
IntermediateYou can deal with most everyday situations, write simple emails and understand the main points of clear texts at work.
B2
Upper intermediateYou can take part in meetings, write clear reports and understand the main ideas of complex texts with confidence.
C1
AdvancedYou use English flexibly and effectively at work, including detailed writing and long, demanding texts.
C2
ProficientYou understand almost everything you read or hear and express yourself precisely, with fine shades of meaning.

How the test works

Each question has a level from A1 to C2. You start around A2 to B1; after each answer the test works out your most likely level and gives you a question close to it, mixing grammar, vocabulary and short reading texts. A right guess counts less than a sure answer, which is why "I don't know" helps. Listening and speaking are not tested.
